1984. A first-floor apartment in Lisbon. A simple idea: to provide excellent eye care.
Forty years later, Optocentro is a national leader—with stores in Lisbon and Porto, international awards, and projects that go far beyond eyewear.
The story continues.
Optocentro was founded in 1984, when it was incorporated in Lisbon. In 1985, it opened its doors on the first floor of 24 António Augusto de Aguiar Avenue. The quality of its service proved to be stronger than any physical barrier. In 1988, with the arrival of a new partner, the company’s strategy was redefined and its services expanded.
Acquisition of the space at Av. António Augusto de Aguiar, 32C, tripling the service area. A milestone that cemented Optocentro’s status as a premier destination in Lisbon—and the beginning of a permanent presence on this avenue that would define its identity.
Maputo, 2007 — Optocentro expanded into Africa in partnership with the Azevedos Group. In 2008, it became the official optician for CGD in Lisbon. In 2009, it opened a location in Porto on Rua Sá da Bandeira. From a single-story store to a global presence.
A corner location at Malo Clinic—a clear sign of prestige. In 2016, the Lisbon headquarters expanded to the second floor. Every step was carefully planned. Every decision was purposeful.
Porto: A complete renovation of the historic Casa Ramos, across from Bolhão Market. Lisbon: EYEkonic byOptocentro has opened on Rua da Prata—a boutique concept that has brought a fresh perspective to Portuguese eyewear.
Luxury office at headquarters. The launch of ReFrame—a pioneering service for refurbishing used frames. In 2021, the EYEkonic collection, inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins, demonstrated that eyewear can also be art.
Eye screenings in the Jamaika neighborhood. Founding of AASO as a founding partner. Partnership agreements with ISEC. Integration of a young person with neurodevelopmental differences into the team. By 2022, it was clear: Optocentro’s commitment extends far beyond the front desk.
Optocentro is moving to its new location at 32-A António Augusto de Aguiar Avenue—a completely redesigned space with a retrofuturistic aesthetic, where every detail tells a story. It is launching the Ponto por Ponto program for people with low vision, holding its first workshop in the Optocentro 2050 Auditorium, and becoming a member of GRACE—Responsible Businesses.

The only optical retailer to win awards in two categories at the ÓpticaPro Awards in 2024 and 2025.
