Results of thevisual screeningcampaign conducted by Optocentro and ISEC from March 27 to 30 at EB1 Sylvia Philips Elementary School in Carnaxide and São Bento Elementary School in Barcarena:
- 48.5% of the children showed signs of probable ametropia;
- In the sample, girls showed poorer results, with a higher proportion requiring a comprehensive eye exam;
- A higher prevalence of myopia was detected, albeit with only a small difference;
- Among the 248 children, about half are likely to have a refractive error, with a high prevalence of 23% having myopia, 22% having hyperopia, and 9% having astigmatism;
- Of the 20 children who wear glasses, half had difficulty on the tests, leading to the conclusion that they may need to have their prescription updated.
Although some of these children showed difficulties on some of the screening tests and may, in fact, turn out to be emmetropic, we recommend a consultation with an eye care specialist.
Screenings are a form of advanced preventive care for children’s eye health during one of the most critical stages of the learning process.
Properly corrected vision is a tool that promotes inclusion.
