Contact Lenses During the COVID-19 Pandemic

It is very important to remember some of the hygiene and care procedures for contact lenses to ensure the health and well-being of your eyes.

Proper hygiene and maintenance of this device are the most important factors in ensuring its safe and responsible use. Regardless of a purely cost-driven decision when purchasing online, regular follow-up with a specialized professional is essential. In addition to actively listening to any complaints that may arise—which can sometimes reveal underlying issues—and conducting a physical examination of the lenses and the eye, the specialist should once again outline the hygiene and maintenance precautions to be followed. COVID-19 has reignited a complex set of public health dilemmas and laid bare the weaknesses of healthcare systems. Given its high virulence and the complete lack of understanding regarding its modes of transmission, everything has been called into question.
Em tempos de pandemia as lentes de contacto também foram consideradas um meio de transmissão. Por esse motivo, aumentar os cuidados de higiene não só é uma forma de nos protegermos, assim como estancar a possibilidade de transmitirmos o vírus.

At Optocentro, my 36 years of experience as an optometrist lead me to recommend daily disposable contact lenses whenever possible. The benefits for eye health are invaluable, given that the eye receives a lens every day that is hydrated, sterilized, and in peak physical condition—ideal for the efficient metabolic maintenance of the cornea.
From a practical standpoint, this is the most flexible way to wear contact lenses. For various reasons, however, this may not always be the best choice. There are other contact lens wear systems—fortnightly, monthly, semi-annual, or annual replacement—and for all of them, the use of a disinfecting solution is essential.Considering the characteristics of hydrogen peroxide systems for lens sterilization, I believe they are currently the most suitable.

Tips:

1- Wash
your hands frequently with soap, especially before touching your eyes or contact lenses;
2 – Follow the recommended wear time and expiration date;
3 – Do not sleep in your contact lenses;
4 – After removing them, rinse them with disinfectant solution;
5 – Store them in the case with disinfectant solution, which should be replaced daily;
6 Before inserting them, rinse them with the disinfectant solution;
7 – Whenever you need to reinsert them, rinse them again with the disinfectant solution;
8 – Once the expiration datehas passed , dispose of the lenses and case in a general waste bin;
9 Never flush the lenses down the toilet or pour them down the sink;
10 – Replace the cases where the lenses are stored overnight every 3 months;
11 – Disinfect the case with the lens cleaning solution;
12 – Never use tap water;
13 – Do not wear the lenses if you feel sick.
